An interesting premise, but nothing was ever done with it beyond just surface-level stuff. Team Plasma, the antagonists of the game, fought to liberate Pokémon from their trainers. It felt like the ambitions of the story superseded the actual quality of writing. While that's great, it can backfire because a bigger focus on story will naturally raise expectations when it comes to what that story is and how it's composed. Characters have dead eyes with stiff animations and the player character regularly has an immersion-breaking flawed expression that doesn't match up with the tone of the scene taking place.
